Derailers are back in the Forum!

Supporting the local boxing club at their amazing event last night!  Left to Right: Kerosene Kate, Lumen, Kernel Panic, Pownderpuff, Jen n’ Tonic, Dirty, and Roohide Ria

Pictures by Roohide Ria and Kernel Panic

It was a long off season with nowhere to skate but finally we’re back where we belong!  In the Revelstoke Forum, skating laps on smooth concrete!  The first two practices back we were all there for more than our share of the practice, and we’re starting dry land training.  Our coach has a bad injury but Pownderpuff stepped up to run things like she normally does and got us back up to speed using Commanda’s practice plans. We all have new gear to try out and get used to.  Gear in derby is just like gear in skiing, we’re all derby gear heads and our gear is still constantly evolving.  Shoutout to Karl at Society for bringing derby gear to town… we definitely needed that.

Kerosene Kate came straight from work with her best shoes on, nice pose Kate!

It’s been too long since we saw each other!  Hanging out with girls all the time is something I severely undervalued before starting with derby.  Getting to meet fresh meat and knowing what lies ahead of them in the next couple months is fun.  Discovering how amazing derby love is can really open your eyes to the amazing experience that is the empowered woman in this day and age.

Last night we ran security for the local boxing club and did 50-50′s!  It seemed as though everyone in town was there to support our fighters, it was packed and sold out.  It was great to meet the boxing club and it was a well run event.   Don’t be surprised if you see them helping us out at our bouts as well. RRD is all about helping other community organizations!

Keep checking back for updates on how we’re doing and for the deets on upcoming bouts!  We have some excitement this year to reveal!  We’re aiming for bigger beer gardens and even more entertaining halftime shows.  We’ll have a couple more home games this year including a double header with a men’s roller derby game!  They are two of the best men’s teams in Canada, so get ready for your first look at some bone crunching good fun.  We updated our logo and we’ll have better variety of swag to strut your stuff in at the upcoming games!

Thanks for your continued support Revelstoke, here’s to a year even better than the last!

Derailers win over Okanagan Derby Dolls 204-176

The Derailers travelled to Kelowna to play against the Derby Dolls in a hard fought game on August 18th.  A much bigger, much more experienced team, it was the hardest game the Derailers played to date.  We were happy to have Commanda and our captain AC Slayed Her in attendance to coach.

This bumps us to 62 out of 101 travel teams in our first year of play!  Unfortunately no video or pictures from the game, if anyone has anything please send it in to the webmaster!

Derailers give back: Season ending donation to food bank and women’s shelter

We heard about the bare cupboards at the food bank this last week and it made us soooo sad!  We had over 800 people at both of our bouts this summer and were so thankful for the support we wanted to give back to the community some of the love that you gave us!  Patti Larson from the food bank and Dawna Jackson from the women’s shelter came to accept donations in the amount of $500 each!

At the bout on July 21st, Scott Burke donated his 50/50 winnings back to the Derailers- thank you’s go out to him also for making it even easier to repeat the generosity he gave us.

Keep attending our bouts Revelstoke!  We’ll give back to you what you give to us…. derby love!!

Blowout win for Derailers vs Pistoleras, final score: 244-79

The Revelstoke Derailers played for another massive crowd on the 21st of July, against the Penticton Pistoleras.  It was a rematch from the beginning of the season where the score of the first game for the Derailers was a heartbreakingly close loss- 189-156.

This win has bumped Derailers up in the statistics quite a few points.

See the standings here: http://www.rollergirl.ca/misc/canadian-roller-derby-ranking.php

And all the scores for our official bouts here: http://flattrackstats.com/teams/12457

Coach Lime and Ms.Commanda together proved to be a great combination to bring the team to a place where on the bench there is order and support.  We thank them both for keeping us all in the game!

Thank you to the sponsors, fans, and volunteers for supporting derby!  It’s been a great home season.  We will be giving back to the community some of the support you’ve given us in the form of a couple donations to charities around town.  Watch in the upcoming week for this.

i-SQVfwjBWe are now looking for a practise space of 90×60 feet square to continue practicing through the winter.  We have recently confirmed a bout in Kelowna against the Derby Dolls on August 18th and would love to see some of our loyal fans come cheer us on!

Thank you Alex Cooper for interviewing us, attempting to learn the game and taking photos!  What a great article on the play by play.  Fact! Roller derby is a real sport with over 160 teams across Canada.

RRD’s Derailers Victorious in Front of Sold Out Home Crowd!

On Saturday June 23rd RRD’s Derailers played Whistler’s Black Diamond Betties in Revelstoke’s first ever, flat-track roller derby bout. Tickets sold out just 2 minutes after opening the doors, and the crowd was eager for some hard hitting action! Strong blocking and quick, agile jammers gave the Derailers the edge they needed to hold the lead through the entire game. The Betties didn’t give it up easy! The final score was 190 for the Derailers, and 139 for the Betties.

RRD would like to thank the fans for their patience, loud cheers and awesome signs! Even if all you knew about derby was to cheer when the Derailers jammer broke out of the pack, you made us feel like rockstars! If you didn’t catch the video before the first whistle, you can find it here (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P2W2b1WBmm4).

Outside the track, over 50 volunteers and officials helped pull this historic event off! RRD is so thankful to everyone who volunteered their time and skills! It was a steep learning curve for everyone, and we are well on our way to be a well oiled, bout producing, machine. If you would like to volunteer, please contact volunteerRRD@gmail.com . Volunteers benefit from some of the best seats in the house!

We’ll see everyone again on July 21st, when we rematch against Penticton’s Pistoleras! Tickets will be available soon, so please pick them up in advance to avoid disappointment! Doors for this event will open at 6:00pm and our Beer Garden will be re-located to the Suicide Seats!

A special thank you to Lime, our guest coach!

Thanks to everyone who came to take pictures of our first bout!  You can find pictures of the bouts here:
